SHUTTLING ON AND off planes was exhausting. Add to that, Zach hadn’t slept—not since the night before. But he drove the rental car through Nashville to the little farmhouse on the outskirts that one of his law-enforcement friends used as a safe house sometimes.

Daisy would like it. Somehow, he knew that. But he hadn’t been prepared for the way her delight wound through him.

“Oh, my God! A chicken coop!” She jumped out of the car and practically ran over to it, leaning over the fence around the fancy little coop. He didn’t see any chickens, but the gray, cloudy skies were spitting out a drizzle that probably kept the animals safe in shelter.

“My friend says there’s a list of chores to do, if you’re into that kind of thing.”

She turned to look at him, eyes bright and smile wide. “Are you kidding? Why didn’t you bring me here in the first place?”

He didn’t mention it had been because he didn’t trust most of the people in Nashville who had any connection to her. Her brother had wanted to isolate her to keep her safe.

It had been a failure of a plan—Zach’s own fault for not seeing the holes in it.

He shook that failure off—had to until the job was done—and focused on the new plan. “I do want you to give your manager a call and tell her you’re planning to come into town tomorrow. Tell her you want a meeting, morning or afternoon doesn’t matter, but I want her to believe you’re leaving in the evening.”

“And are we keeping this meeting?”

“Of course.”

Some of her simple joy over the chicken coop had faded, but she didn’t argue with him. Didn’t try to tell him for the hundredth time she trusted her manager. “And...”

She trailed off, turning her gaze back to the chickens. He couldn’t read her feelings from just looking at her back, but he thought the fact she was hiding her face told him enough to gather she wasn’t happy.

“You’ll be with me, right?”

“You aren’t going any damn where without me, sweetheart.”

She turned to face him again, lifting an eyebrow. “Oh, is that so?”

“You’re not going to be contrary over that. Not right now. This isn’t about telling you what to do. It’s about keeping you safe. You and me are stuck like glue.”

She smiled sweetly—which should have been his first clue something was off, but he was dead on his feet. She sauntered over to him, chickens forgotten. She reached out, and he stiffened against the touch.

Not that it didn’t shudder through him as she playfully walked her fingers up his chest. He tried to ward it off, but then she looked up at him under her lashes.

“Like glue? What kind of sleeping arrangements were you planning?”

Lust jolted through him so painfully it was a wonder he didn’t simply keel over. Or give up...and in to her.

But he wouldn’t. He couldn’t. “We’ll figure it out inside.”

“Don’t tease, Zach.” She sighed heavily, lifting her palm to his cheek.
